MAD LABS
SUPPLIES
Cardboard box (*Make sure that it fits around the child's torso) and an extra two flaps of cardboard.
Party Streamers (White)
Wooden dowels (4) 12” dowels
Choice of paint color (tempura/acrylic are both fine to use)
Styrofoam Ball
Tin Foil
Wide Ribbon
Hot Glue Gun
INSTRUCTIONS
Open your box. Turn all flaps facing outward. Bend the flaps open to make sure they stay open.
Paint your box your preferred colors.
While the box dries, cut your streamer to be placed on the back of the box, where a tail would be. This is your smoke trail!
Take your two flaps of cardboard. These will be your propellers. Cover them in tin foil.
Optional: once the paint has dried on your plane, hot glue wooden dowels in between the corners of each flap, connecting the top flap to the bottom flap.
Use a hole punch to create four holes in the body portion of the box. They should be about collar bone width apart in front and in back. Thread your thick ribbon the holes and knot them. These will be your straps to wear your costume.
Finally, hot glue your propellor flaps to one another to look like an “X,” and then glue the “X” onto the front of your plane.
Once propellers are secured, hot glue your styrofoam ball onto the “X.” Caution: The hot glue can melt the styrofoam, so swiftness with this step, only using as much glue is needed to hold the ball in place.
Voila! A fun and creative 3-D costume from a cardboard box!

Party Streamers (Colorful ones for unicorns, black for horses)
Choice of paint color (tempura/acrylic are both fine to use)
Googly Eyes
Wide Ribbon
Scissors/Box Cutter (Adult help and supervision recommended).
Hot Glue Gun
INSTRUCTIONS
Open all edges of your box and cut off the flaps.
Keep one flap to be used as the animal’s head, a long rectangular flap is best.
Position the flap long ways, and shape it into a horse’s head. At the bottom of the flap, cut an adjacent slant. The horse’s head will slip onto the box, which will become the horse’s body. Keep the slit as narrow as possible, while still being able to fit in on top of the body. The more snug the fit, the less chance it will move or fall off.
Paint box and flap your preferred animal color(s).
While paint dries, cut strips of streamers, a minimum of five pieces are recommended for the tail. Streamers should be the length of the distance from the top of the box (where the tail would be), to the back of the knee.
Streamers are needed for the horse/unicorns mane as well. Six strips of about 12-20” are recommended. Attach strips to both sides of the “head” achieve a full mane look.
Once the box and flap are dry, glue the googly eyes, tail streamers, and mane streamers in their respective places
Use a hole punch to create four holes in the body portion of the box. They should be about collar bone width apart in front and in back. Thread your thick ribbon the holes and knot them. These will be your straps to wear your costume.
